1999John Walker Turnbull was born on May 18, 1958, in Durham, England. He grew up in a family with British parents named Jack and Jenny Turnbull. As a child, John spent time working alongside his father as an apprentice welder. This experience helped him learn valuable skills during his early teens.
When he reached his late teenage years, John decided to join the British Army. He served in the British 4th Royal Tank Regiment for nine years. After his time in the army, he was posted in Osnabrück, Germany. Eventually, he moved back to Kent, England, with his wife, Marion Jane Turnbull, and their son, Aaron. In Kent, he found work as a heavy goods vehicle driver.
In 1996, John was involved in a serious road accident. A large truck, trying to avoid hitting an animal, crashed into his vehicle. John survived this terrible experience but was severely injured. After the accident, he was rescued by a passing road user, who helped pull him from beneath the truck.
John spent time in the hospital recovering from his injuries. He had surgery, and titanium plates were placed in his body to fix broken bones. He also went through physiotherapy to help regain movement in his arm, leg, and ankle. After further surgeries, he had permanent plates added to his body.
During his recovery, John became interested in the 'Shooters Rights Campaign.' This group worked to stop the ban on handguns in Britain that was put in place after a tragic event in 1996 known as the Dunblane massacre.
After he healed, John took on a new job as the Head of Security at Valence School for disabled children. He worked there until September 20, 1999. It was around this time that John found out about his wife Marion's affair with a man named David Battle. This discovery had a big impact on his life.
On September 26, 1999, John Walker Turnbull arranged to meet with his wife, Marion Jane Turnbull, and another man named David Battle at their home in Kemsing, Kent. During this meeting, Turnbull shot both his wife and Mr. Battle using a shotgun. At the time, his son Aaron was staying with his grandparents.
The following day, on September 27, 1999, John Walker Turnbull took his own life. He shot himself in the head on a hill near his home in Durham. His actions left behind a tragic story of loss and violence.
