Bio

John Troy was born on December 5, 1969. He grew up in a challenging environment. Details about his family and early childhood are limited. However, it is known that he spent time in various locations, including Tennessee and Florida.

As a young adult, Troy faced legal troubles. In 1988, he began his life of crime by selling cocaine in Fayetteville, Tennessee. He was sentenced to five years in prison for this offense. After that, he had other legal issues and spent time in prison for burglary and aggravated assault in the early 1990s.

Throughout the years, he was involved in multiple criminal activities. He was arrested for armed robbery in Florida. These offenses led to multiple convictions, resulting in several prison sentences.

While in prison, he developed a pen-pal relationship with a woman named Marilyn Brooks. They became romantically involved and planned to live together upon his release. Troy was released from prison in July 2001. At that point, he moved in with Brooks at his mother's apartment.

After his release, Troy was required to check in with his probation officer regularly. He was subject to drug testing as part of his probation. It was during this time that he tested positive for drugs, which caused increased stress in his life.

Murder Story

On September 11, 2001, John Troy committed a murder in Sarasota County, Florida. His victim was Bonnie Carroll. That evening, Troy tested positive for cocaine during a drug test required by his probation. After an argument with his girlfriend, Marilyn Brooks, he left their apartment claiming he was going to a store.

Instead of going to the store, Troy visited a friend several times that night, where he used more cocaine. After midnight, he went to Bonnie Carroll's apartment, a slight acquaintance. Troy later told others that he and Carroll had drinks and marijuana together. According to him, they argued when Carroll spoke ill of Brooks. Troy then tied Carroll up with electrical cords and gagged her.

During the struggle, Carroll managed to free herself. In response, Troy attacked her with a knife and began stabbing her multiple times. He stabbed her a total of 44 times, leading to her death. He then left the apartment, believing she was dead, but returned after hearing sounds from the bedroom and cut her throat.

The next day, Bonnie Carroll's mother found her body. Troy's involvement was confirmed through DNA evidence and fingerprints found at the scene. After leaving Carroll's apartment, Troy attacked another woman, Traci Burchette, stealing her car and wallet. This led to his arrest.

On January 23, 2004, Troy was sentenced to death for the murder of Bonnie Carroll, along with other charges related to the attack on Burchette.
