Bio

John Sweeney was born in 1958 in Liverpool, England. He grew up in a working-class family. As he grew older, Sweeney showed signs of behavioral issues. He displayed violent tendencies and was often aggressive toward others.

Sweeney left school at a young age and began working as a carpenter. He took on various jobs in construction, often moving between different sites across the UK and Europe. He was known to use multiple aliases during this time. This pattern of living under different names would later prove crucial in his life.

In the late 1980s, Sweeney entered into several unstable relationships with various women. His relationships were often volatile and marked by jealousy and control. His behavior escalated over time, and he would frequently become violent when he felt abandoned or rejected by a partner. This trend of violence became more evident when he attacked a girlfriend in 1994, resulting in an attempted murder charge.

After this conviction, Sweeney went on the run, living in hiding and using different identities. He managed to evade police for several years while continuing to engage in relationships with various women. Despite his criminal history, Sweeney was able to maintain a façade of normalcy in his job as a carpenter.

Murder Story

John Sweeney, also known as the "Scalp Hunter," was a carpenter who committed brutal murders in the 1990s and early 2000s. He was charged with the murders of two women, Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields, and was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

John Sweeney and Melissa Halstead

The first known victim, Melissa Halstead, disappeared from her home in Amsterdam in 1990. Her dismembered remains were discovered in the Westersingel canal in Rotterdam, but it took many years for her identity to be confirmed. In 2008, DNA evidence identified her body, which had been found with her head and hands missing. Melissa was a former model originally from Ohio.

The second victim, Paula Fields, was last seen in late 2000. She had a complicated life in north London, which included struggles with addiction. Her remains were found in February 2001, packed into holdalls and dumped in the Regent's Canal. Ten separate body parts were recovered, and similar to Melissa, Paula’s head, hands, and feet were missing.

Paula Fields

Sweeney was known for his violent behavior, particularly towards women. He had previously attempted to murder another girlfriend in 1994, which led him to go on the run. He lived under different aliases throughout Europe before being captured after the discovery of Paula's body in 2001.

Delia Balmer survived after John Sweeney attacked her with an axe and knife.

During the investigation, police found disturbing artwork and writings at Sweeney’s home, indicating his violent tendencies. Some of his drawings focused on women and reflected his hatred of them.

He had collected poems and notes that detailed violent thoughts or actions towards his victims.

Sweeney was initially charged with attempted murder but faced further scrutiny as evidence emerged linking him to the murders of Melissa and Paula. He went on trial in April 2011 and was sentenced to life without parole for the two murders, with a judge indicating the severity of the crimes warranted such a sentence.

John Sweeney dumped the dismembered remains of Paula Fields in Regent’s Canal near King’s Cross in 2000.

Authorities continue to investigate possible connections to other missing women who may have crossed paths with Sweeney during his life.
