Bio

John Norman Holmes Thorne was born in 1900 in London, England. He had a relatively ordinary early life and was educated in local schools. As a young man, he worked as an electrical engineer. In 1917, at the age of 17, he met Elsie Emily Cameron. Elsie, a 26-year-old typist, wore glasses and was described as plain in appearance. She was concerned about finding a husband and decided that Norman would be a suitable partner for her.

The couple began to date, and in 1920, they became engaged. However, in the summer of 1921, Norman lost his job. To support himself and Elsie, he decided to start his own business. With £100 his father gave him, he bought a small piece of land in Crowborough, Sussex, where he established Wesley Poultry Farm. He worked hard to build the farm, cycling to London on weekends to visit Elsie.

Elsie would often travel to Crowborough to spend time with Norman. Eventually, in December 1922, they got engaged. After that, however, Elsie faced difficulties in her job and lost employment several times. Despite Norman's hard work, his business struggled, making it hard for them to set a wedding date.

In 1924, Norman attended a local dance and met another woman named Bessie Coldicott. He found himself torn between his feelings for Elsie and the more carefree Bessie. In late 1924, Elsie traveled to Crowborough, claiming to be pregnant and insisting they marry. Norman felt pressure from Elsie's demands but was also growing distant because of his feelings for Bessie.

On December 5, 1924, Elsie took a train to visit Norman at his farm. That day marked a significant turning point in both their lives. Unfortunately, after she arrived, the circumstances surrounding their relationship would lead to tragic events that would change everything.

Murder Story

On December 5, 1924, Elsie Emily Cameron traveled to Crowborough, Sussex, to visit her fiancé, John Norman Holmes Thorne. She carried an attaché case and was last seen heading towards his poultry farm. After she failed to return home, her father sent a telegram to Thorne, asking for news of her. Thorne replied that he had not seen her, which raised concerns.

As days went by without any sign of Elsie, her father notified the police about her disappearance. Witnesses came forward, stating they had seen her at the farm on the day she went missing. On January 15, 1925, after a search was conducted on Thorne's property, Elsie's dismembered body was found buried at the farm, under a chicken run.

Thorne later admitted to having an argument with Elsie after she arrived at the farm. He claimed that he left for a short period, and when he returned, he found her hanging from a beam. In a panic, he dismembered her body and buried the remains. At his trial, expert testimony indicated that there were no signs of hanging on Elsie's body and there were bruise marks that suggested she had been struck before her death.

During the trial, Thorne's defense argued that Elsie's mental health could have led her to suicide. However, the evidence presented showed inconsistencies in his story and indicated he was responsible for her death. On March 16, 1925, after a brief deliberation, the jury found him guilty of murder. Thorne was sentenced to death and executed by hanging on April 22, 1925.
