December 13, 1985John Francis Wille was born on February 14, 1964. He grew up in Louisiana, specifically in the small town of LaPlace. Details about his early life are not widely known, but he was part of a family that often moved around. This lifestyle affected his upbringing and the people he interacted with as a child.
As a teenager, Wille faced various challenges. His family life was not stable, and he had trouble in school. He dropped out of high school and began to drift between different places. This nomadic lifestyle likely contributed to his feeling of isolation and instability.
By the time he reached adulthood, Wille was known to have a troubled personality. He had conflicts with authority figures and faced difficulties in maintaining relationships. Reports indicate that his behavior became increasingly erratic as he got older. He struggled to hold down jobs and often found himself in trouble with the law for minor offenses.
His criminal history began to develop in his late teens, involving petty crimes and disputes with some of the people he dealt with. Wille’s actions during these early years hinted at deeper issues. As he became a young adult, he continued to make choices that would lead to serious consequences in his life.
In early June 1985, 8-year-old Nichole Lapatta went missing from her home in LaPlace, Louisiana. Her body was found on June 6, in nearby woods. It showed signs of being battered, raped, and strangled. During the search, authorities also found another body identified as Billy Phillips, a 25-year-old man. He had been stabbed many times, had his hands severed, and his genitals mutilated.
On July 15, 1985, Frank Powe was hitchhiking near Bagdad, Florida. A state trooper warned him against hitchhiking. Later that day, he was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver. Shortly after, in Milton, Florida, police responded to a landlord-tenant dispute involving John Wille and his girlfriend. They had fallen behind on rent, and their landlord wanted them to leave. Wille set his landlord's mobile home on fire, which killed several dogs in the process.
After Wille's girlfriend spoke to the police, she revealed a series of murders across four states. She described a situation where Wille had picked up Frank Powe but became angry over Powe's comments towards her. Wille beat Powe until he was unconscious, placed him in the truck bed, and later ran over him deliberately.
Authorities connected Wille to the earlier arson death of 78-year-old Ida Bodreaux in Louisiana. This link helped investigators realize they had a serial killer. They also found connections between Wille and the murders of Nichole Lapatta and Billy Phillips. He was suspected in several other cases, including the murder of a cab driver in Alabama.
While in custody, Wille confessed to five murders but later recanted. FBI agents believed he might be linked to many more killings. In September 1985, he was indicted for Frank Powe's murder and pleaded guilty. He received a life sentence with no chance of parole for the first 25 years. He faced more charges for the murder of the cab driver and other cases in Louisiana.
