Bio

John Christopher Sawyers was born in 1958. His early life was marked by significant challenges. His mother died when he was very young. After her death, he was raised by his father, who worked as a right-wing minister. The loss of his mother at such a young age and his father's strict upbringing may have influenced Sawyers as he grew up. His father testified on his behalf during Sawyers' trial later in life.

As a child, John Sawyers faced difficulties that impacted his behavior and choices. He had no previous prison record before the crime that he committed in 1983. He lived in Northwest Houston. He reportedly struggled with issues related to substance abuse from a young age. Sawyers also had a history of using drugs, which included using Mandrex, a type of tranquilizer.

Growing up, Sawyers had a neighbor named Ethyl Delaney. Ethyl was a 67-year-old widow who lived alone. She was not only a neighbor to Sawyers but had also notarized some of his personal papers in the past. Delaney's son was Judge Joe Delaney, who served in Bryan, Texas. This connection added another layer to the relationship between Sawyers and Delaney.

By the time he reached adulthood, Sawyers had served in the navy. His military service was cut short due to issues related to a prior marijuana charge, which led to his discharge for fraudulent enlistment. Despite these setbacks, Sawyers' life continued on a troubled path shaped by his childhood experiences, substance use, and connections with those around him.

Murder Story

On February 2, 1983, John Christopher Sawyers fatally attacked Ethyl Delaney, a 67-year-old widow. He entered her home in Harris County, Texas, and assaulted her after forcing her into her bedroom. Using a cast-iron skillet, he struck her on the head multiple times, causing her death.

During the attack, Sawyers stole several items from Delaney, including $30 in cash, three rings, and her car. After committing the crime, he discarded the skillet and left the scene. He then drove Delaney's car to a pawn shop, where he sold the rings for $200.

Sawyers was later arrested after he was involved in a traffic accident while driving Delaney's car. This incident led to his conviction for her murder. He was sentenced to death and spent years on death row.

Despite appeals regarding his conviction and sentence, Sawyers' pleas were denied. He was executed by lethal injection on May 18, 1993, and died at 12:23 a.m. His execution was witnessed by family members, and he provided no final statement before his death.
