November 8, 1984Joe Louis Wise was born in 1954. He grew up in a challenging environment. Details about his early life are not widely known, but it is documented that he had a troubled background. Wise had a complicated family life, which may have influenced his later actions.
As a young man, he had various jobs and faced many difficulties. There are no particular stories highlighting his achievements or any significant events during his childhood and adolescence. Information about his education, friendships, and community ties is also scarce.
By the time he reached adulthood, he had developed traits that led him down a path of crime. Wise's choices eventually caught up with him when he committed robbery and murder in 1983. He was 29 years old at the time of the crime. After this point, his life took a significant turn, leading to his arrest and subsequent trials. In the years following, he faced various legal battles until he was executed in 1993.
On December 1, 1983, Joe Louis Wise committed a robbery in Boydton, Virginia. He targeted William H. Ricketson, a 43-year-old employee at the Mecklenburg Correctional Center. Wise attacked Ricketson, beating him severely. After the beating, Wise shot Ricketson twice with handguns.
After shooting him, Wise disposed of Ricketson’s body in a hole that had been dug as a toilet behind an old factory plant in Chase City. Ricketson suffered a skull fracture and gunshot wounds, but he ultimately died from drowning in the water that had filled the hole.
Following the murder, Wise took Ricketson's truck. He was arrested later that same day while trying to put oil in the stolen vehicle. During the arrest, Wise admitted his involvement in the crime.
Wise was convicted of capital murder, armed robbery, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The jury found his conduct particularly heinous and recommended the death penalty. After exhausting various appeals, Joe Louis Wise was executed by electrocution in Virginia on September 14, 1993.
