July 22, 1985Joe Elton Nixon was born on August 23, 1961 in Florida.
On August 12, 1984, Joe Elton Nixon approached Jeanne Bickner in a parking lot at the Governor's Square Mall in Tallahassee, Florida. He asked her for help with his car. After some time, Bickner offered to give him a ride home, which he accepted. However, instead of taking him home, Nixon forced Bickner to drive to a remote area.
Once they reached a secluded wooded area, Nixon overpowered Bickner and placed her in the trunk of her car. He then drove to a location where he removed Bickner from the trunk. There, he tied her to a tree using jumper cables. During this time, Bickner begged for her life and offered him money and her car. Nixon did not relent and began burning some of her personal belongings and parts of the car.
At some point, Nixon put a paper bag over Bickner's head. He then set her on fire, which led to her death. On August 13, 1984, two joggers discovered Bickner's charred body in the woods. The police were notified.
After learning that Bickner's body had been found, Nixon felt nervous. He disposed of more of her belongings and attempted to burn the car, which he later abandoned in a drainage ditch. Information from Nixon's girlfriend and brother eventually led police to him, and he was arrested on August 14, 1984.
Nixon was charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, and arson. On July 30, 1985, he was sentenced to death and is currently on death row at the Union Correctional Institution in Florida.
