Bio

Jimmie Ray Slaughter was born on June 6, 1947. He grew up in Oklahoma. There is not much detailed information available about his early life, but he became a nurse and later joined the Army Reserve. He was married and had children. His personal life included complex relationships, including a significant connection with Melody Wuertz.

Slaughter had been married three times and had children with at least one of his wives. He worked as a psychiatric nurse and had a reputation for being manipulative in his relationships with women. He was known to have had multiple affairs, including one with Melody Wuertz, who was younger than him. The circumstances of their relationship were complicated, especially after they had a child together.

Melody gave birth to their daughter, Jessica Rae Wuertz, in July 1990. After the birth, the relationship between Slaughter and Melody became strained. Melody wanted him to contribute more to their child's upbringing, which Slaughter resisted. This led to legal actions regarding child support. As a result, he became increasingly angry and threatened Melody.

Slaughter’s background and history with relationships suggested he had a pattern of controlling behavior, particularly toward women. This included manipulation and attempts to dominate their lives. He expressed a willingness to go to great lengths to avoid facing responsibility for his actions related to his family obligations.

Before the tragic events occurred, Slaughter was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas for active military duty. This separation from Melody and Jessica was significant in the timeline leading to later events.

Murder Story

On July 2, 1991, in Edmond, Oklahoma, Jimmie Ray Slaughter murdered his former girlfriend, Melody Wuertz, and their one-year-old daughter, Jessica. The violence began with Melody, who was shot in the head and neck. After being shot, she was stabbed multiple times and had her body mutilated. One of the marks carved into her abdomen resembled the letter "R."

Jessica was just five days shy of her first birthday when she was shot twice in the head. Prosecutors said Slaughter shot and paralyzed Melody first before killing Jessica. He then finished off Melody, ensuring neither could speak or identify him as the killer.

After the murders, Slaughter left Edmond and returned to Kansas, where he was with his wife and daughters, trying to establish an alibi. However, testimonies from store clerks indicated they remembered his wife and children but not him. Investigators found items in the Wuertz home that had been planted by Slaughter to mislead them, which included soiled underwear and hairs from a black hospital patient.

Slaughter claimed he was innocent throughout his trial and maintained that he had been shopping with his family at the time of the murders. Despite this, he was convicted based on circumstantial evidence and was sentenced to death.

On March 15, 2005, he was executed by lethal injection. Before his execution, he had a final meal that included fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and cherry ice cream. Slaughter continued to insist on his innocence until the end, declaring it was a lie from the beginning. He was pronounced dead after the lethal chemicals were administered.
