December 7, 1988Jerry Michael Wickham was born on September 5, 1945. He grew up in Florida. Not much is known about his childhood, but like many children, he had hopes and dreams for the future. As he reached adolescence, his life took a different path.
Throughout his teenage years, Jerry faced many challenges. It is not clear how these challenges affected him, but they may have contributed to his later decisions. While some young people find supportive friends and mentors during this time, Jerry seems to have struggled in finding his way.
As an adult, Jerry Wickham had several brushes with the law before he was involved in more serious criminal activities. He faced various charges, which led to a troubled life. By the time he was in his 40s, he was already known to law enforcement.
Despite these early troubles, he lived a life that led him to make certain choices that would change everything. Jerry's life story is a reminder of how complex early experiences can be. Many factors shape a person's future, and early life can have a lasting impact.
On March 5, 1986, Jerry Michael Wickham was traveling with a group along Interstate 10. They were low on money and needed funds for gas and other travel expenses. Rather than asking for help at a church, Wickham and his group decided to rob someone to get the money they needed.
Once they reached Tallahassee, Florida, the group drove north along Thomasville Road toward the Florida-Georgia border. They stopped close to the border, where the men in the group hid while the women and children flagged down a passing car. Morris “Rick” Fleming stopped to offer assistance, and upon realizing there was nothing wrong, began to walk back to his vehicle.
At that moment, Wickham jumped out from hiding, brandishing a gun. He shot Fleming in the back, causing him to turn around. Wickham then shot Fleming in the chest, and at this point, Fleming started begging for his life. Wickham shot him twice more in the head, killing him.
After the shooting, Wickham and his group took $4.05 from Fleming. They drove to a nearby gas station to buy gas, where Wickham changed his bloodstained clothes. On the drive back towards Tallahassee, Wickham instructed his companions to dispose of the bullet shells by throwing them out of the car window. They continued their journey to Tampa, stopping at a church along the way to ask for more money.
Wickham was arrested for the murder of Morris “Rick” Fleming and faced charges that later led to his conviction. He was sentenced to death on December 8, 1988.
