Murder Story

On November 28, 1983, Jerry Frank Townsend was involved in the murders of Hal and Margaret Fuller in Lake County, Indiana. Hal was 65 years old, and Margaret was 63. The couple were acquaintances of Townsend.

During the incident, both victims suffered multiple stab wounds. Hal Fuller was stabbed ten times, and Margaret Fuller was stabbed nine times. After the stabbings, a blood-stained steak knife was found in the driveway of the Fullers’ home. Hal's open wallet was discovered near his body, indicating a robbery.

Two days after the murders, the Fullers’ car was found abandoned. Witnesses reported that Townsend and another person, Phillip McCollum, had been driving a similar vehicle. Their girlfriends stated that they had seen them with a radio they intended to sell and that Townsend had a cut on his hand, which could have been from the attack.

When questioned by the police, both Townsend and McCollum gave similar stories. They admitted that they had visited the Fuller home and talked with them. At some point, as Hal was about to make a phone call, Townsend stabbed him in the back. McCollum then attacked Margaret. She begged for her life, but he continued to stab her. After killing Hal, Townsend stabbed him in the chest to ensure he was dead.

After the murders, there was no money taken from the Fullers. Instead, the attackers took a radio and drove away in the Fullers' car. Townsend was later convicted of murder and felony murder. He received a death sentence on March 8, 1985. However, on April 29, 1999, his sentence was modified to 120 years in prison as part of a plea agreement.
