— Jeremy Vargas Sagastegui
Jeremy Vargas Sagastegui was born on November 1, 1970. He grew up in a rural area in Washington. His early life included various challenges that shaped his future. Information about his family background is limited, but it is noted that there were significant issues. His mother, Cayetana "Katie" Vargas, later asserted that Sagastegui experienced sexual and physical abuse during his childhood. This claim was part of the discussions surrounding his mental health later in life.
As a young person, Sagastegui's behavior raised concerns. He often displayed signs of emotional and psychological struggles. Reports indicate that he had difficulty managing his emotions and formed connections with others. These difficulties continued into his teenage years and early adulthood.
Sagastegui did not have a substantial criminal record before the tragic events that defined his later life. However, he was known to have issues with the law related to minor crimes. He engaged with the legal system but did not demonstrate any significant efforts to address his mental health problems.
His life took a drastic turn when he accepted a babysitting job for a friend, which would lead to the tragic events that followed. While details about his relationships and social life remain scarce, they were likely impacted by the same emotional challenges he faced throughout his formative years.
On November 19, 1995, Jeremy Vargas Sagastegui was baby-sitting two children in a mobile home in Finley, Washington. During the night, he killed three people. He first murdered three-year-old Keivan Sarbacher by beating, stabbing, and drowning him in a bathtub. After that, he shot Keivan's mother, 21-year-old Melissa Sarbacher, and her friend, 26-year-old Lisa Vera-Acevado, when they returned home.
Sagastegui had waited for their arrival before committing the murders. He later confessed to the police, admitting to all three killings. After the crimes, he discarded evidence by giving the police his bloody clothes and the rifle used in the shootings.
The police arrested him the following day. Sagastegui acted as his own attorney during the trial, choosing not to present any defense. He pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated first-degree murder and was sentenced to death in 1996. He refused to appeal his sentence, stating that he wanted to die.
On October 13, 1998, Sagastegui was executed by lethal injection in Washington. At the time of his execution, he expressed no remorse for his actions and did not make any last statements. He became the first person executed by lethal injection in that state.
