Jennifer Ann Mee was born on July 28, 1991, in St. Petersburg, Florida. She grew up in a hometown that provided her with a typical Florida childhood. As a young girl, she enjoyed school and had a love for making friends. However, her teenage years took an unexpected turn that changed her life significantly.
In 2007, when Mee was just 15 years old, she gained widespread attention due to a strange medical condition. She developed a case of uncontrollable hiccups that lasted for several months. Mee claimed that she was hiccupping about 50 times a minute. This unusual condition made her famous and landed her on several national television shows, including NBC's Today Show. The media was very interested in her situation, and she became a well-known figure across the United States as the "Hiccup Girl."
During her search for a cure, she tried many different methods, such as eating sugar, swallowing peanut butter, breathing into a bag, and even having friends scare her. After several attempts and much media coverage, Dr. Bob Linde was eventually able to help her stop the hiccups. Following her time in the spotlight, Mee's life took another turn. In June 2007, she ran away from home, which also made the news.
Around this time, she began dating a man named Lamont Newton. This relationship led her down a different path. Mee, along with Newton and another friend named Laron Raiford, became involved in a plan to commit robbery. They aimed to find victims online and set them up for theft.
murder story
In 2010, Jennifer Mee met a 22-year-old man named Shannon Griffin online. She invited him to a vacant house where her friends, Laron Raiford and Lamont Newton, were waiting. They had planned to rob him. When Griffin arrived, he was confronted by Raiford and Newton, who had a .38 caliber handgun. During the robbery, Griffin was shot four times, and he died from his injuries.
Mee, Raiford, and Newton were arrested within hours of the crime. They all lived together, and according to police, they admitted their involvement in the crime. As a result, Mee was charged with murder.
Before the trial started, Mee's lawyer suggested she could plead guilty for a 15-year sentence, which she declined. Raiford was offered a 40-year deal but turned it down. During the trial, a recorded phone call between Mee and her mother was played. In the call, she claimed, "I didn't kill nobody... I set everything up. It all went wrong, Mom."
Experts testified that Mee's DNA was found on the victim's shirt. Her lawyer argued that she had schizophrenia. A psychological evaluation determined she was competent to stand trial. Another defense claimed her hiccups were a symptom of Tourette's syndrome.
In 2013, Mee was found guilty of first-degree murder. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Her co-defendants, Raiford and Newton, were also convicted and received life sentences. After the trial, Mee's attorney filed for a new trial, but the request was denied.
