January 30, 1987Jeffrey Paul Sloan was born on April 26, 1966, in Missouri. He grew up in a family that included his father, Paul, his mother, Judith, and two brothers, Timothy and Jason. As a child, Jeffrey lived in Clay County, where his family dynamics were complicated. Reports suggest that his father was strict and abusive, influencing the family atmosphere. Jeffrey’s childhood experiences included witnessing violence and conflict within the home.
Jeffrey attended local schools, where he had a few friends but struggled to build deeper relationships. His family life remained tumultuous, and he eventually dropped out of high school. At the age of sixteen, he began working various jobs to help support himself. He also began to develop a relationship with a girl who lived nearby, which brought him some comfort but was complicated by his home life.
As he approached adulthood, Jeffrey’s situation continued to deteriorate. His parents’ marital problems, characterized by conflict and abuse, created a toxic environment. These experiences contributed to his feelings of isolation and frustration. By the age of nineteen, Sloan had already dropped out of school and immersed himself in work, but the underlying family issues deeply affected him.
In December 1985, a significant and tragic event occurred that would change Jeffrey’s life forever. On December 11, he was involved in a horrific incident that led to the deaths of his family members.
On December 11, 1985, Jeffrey Paul Sloan, then 19 years old, committed a mass murder in his family home located in Clay County, Missouri. He shot his mother, Judith, aged 38; his father, Paul, aged 41; and his two brothers, Timothy, aged 18, and Jason, aged 9. The murders took place at approximately 11:30 a.m. while the family members were asleep.
After the shootings, Sloan left the house and went to work. He then called his girlfriend and instructed her to go to his home and deliver a message to his father. This girlfriend and her mother discovered the bodies after Sloan had arranged for them to visit. Shortly after, law enforcement arrived at the scene and found all four family members deceased from gunshot wounds. Sloan was not initially present at the house when police arrived.
About 45 minutes after police arrived, Sloan returned home and was taken to the Clinton County Sheriff's office for questioning. He initially made claims that a neighbor was responsible for the murders, alleging the neighbor had an affair with his mother. However, after further investigation, authorities found no evidence of burglary or outside involvement.
Later that evening, after discussing the situation with his grandfather, Sloan confessed to the murders. He stated that he had committed the act to end the abuse inflicted by his father on his family, claiming that his mother had encouraged him to kill. Following his confession, he was charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
Sloan was arrested on the same day as the murders and later put on trial. In January 1987, he was convicted for the first-degree murder of his brother Jason. The jury recommended the death penalty, taking into account the nature of the crimes and found aggravating circumstances given the brutal nature of the killings.
Sloan was eventually executed by lethal injection in Missouri on February 21, 1996.
