murder story

In February 2003, Jeffrey Mailhot picked up Audrey L. Harris, a 33-year-old prostitute, outside a laundromat. After driving her to his apartment, he strangled her to death as soon as they got inside. Unsure of what to do next, he kept her body in his apartment for a day and a half. Inspired by an episode of The Sopranos where a character is dismembered in a bathtub, Mailhot bought a bow saw from a hardware store. He then dismembered Harris' body in his bathtub and disposed of the remains in dumpsters around Woonsocket and nearby areas. Her mother put up missing person posters after her disappearance.

Fourteen months later, in April 2004, Mailhot murdered 42-year-old Christine C. Dumont, another prostitute. He followed the same pattern: picking her up, strangling her in his apartment, dismembering her body, and disposing of the remains in dumpsters.

In July 2004, Mailhot killed Stacie K. Goulet, a 24-year-old prostitute, after picking her up from a Fourth of July fireworks show. As with the previous victims, he dismembered her body and discarded the remains.

In June 2004, Mailhot attempted to kill Jocelin Martel, a 27-year-old prostitute, whom he picked up outside the Thundermist Health Center. When they arrived at his apartment, he started choking her, but Martel fought back by headbutting him and poking him in the eye, which allowed her to escape. She did not report the incident to the police, but an anonymous tip led law enforcement to her. Using her description of the apartment, police identified Mailhot. Another surviving victim also came forward with a complaint against him.

On July 17, 2004, police arrested Mailhot at his home. He confessed to the murders and assaults, expressing remorse and claiming he couldn't stop himself. During the search of his apartment, investigators found blood from Dumont and Harris in the bathtub and the saw used to dismember Goulet. Surveillance footage showed Mailhot buying the saw. The police searched a landfill and found Goulet's remains, but they couldn't locate the remains of the other two victims.

Mailhot was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to commit murder, and one count of felony assault. On February 16, 2006, he pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to two life terms plus ten years. He is currently in the Rhode Island Maximum Security Prison in Cranston and will be eligible for parole in 2047 when he is 77 years old.
