Bio

Jedidiah Isaac Murphy was born on September 1, 1975, in Texas. He completed the 12th grade and later worked as a welder, contractor, and laborer. At the time of the murder, he was 25 years old. Before the capital murder case, Murphy had a criminal record. TDCJ records show that he previously served time under inmate number 687358 for burglary of a habitation and burglary of a vehicle. He was released in 1994 on shock probation.

Murder Story

On October 4, 2000, in Garland, Texas, Jedidiah Murphy forced 79-year-old Bertie Lee Cunningham to give him a ride at gunpoint. After about 30 minutes, he forced her into the trunk of her car. She was shot while getting into the trunk. Murphy then drove the car to Van Zandt County, where Cunningham was removed from the trunk and drowned in a creek. After the killing, Murphy used her credit cards to buy alcohol and cigarettes.

The case was prosecuted in Dallas County. Murphy was convicted of capital murder in June 2001, and the trial judge sentenced him to death after the jury answered the required punishment questions under Texas law. His direct appeal was later affirmed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

In the years after his conviction, Murphy continued filing appeals. Shortly before his execution, his attorneys challenged evidence used during the punishment phase and sought DNA testing connected to other alleged crimes used to argue future dangerousness. They also raised concerns about the lethal injection drugs. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately allowed the execution to proceed.

Jedidiah Isaac Murphy was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, on October 10, 2023. He was 48 years old.
