April 16, 2006Jean Pierre Orlewicz was born on March 14, 1990. He grew up in Plymouth, Michigan. He was a student at Canton High School. He was known to have friends and interacted with peers.
At age 17, in November 2007, a significant event in his life changed everything. He was involved in a serious incident that led to his arrest. This event would mark the beginning of his struggles with the law. At the time of his arrest, Jean Pierre was preparing to graduate high school. His future appeared uncertain as he was charged with serious offenses soon after turning 18.
On November 7, 2007, Jean Pierre Orlewicz, along with his friend Alexander Letkemann, lured 26-year-old Daniel Sorensen into a garage that belonged to Orlewicz's grandfather in Canton, Michigan. The two teens had prepared the garage for the killing by laying down a tarp. Sorensen was stabbed multiple times, specifically in the back, and he was also beheaded.
After killing Sorensen, Orlewicz and Letkemann burned his hands and feet with a blowtorch, likely to conceal his identity. They then wrapped Sorensen's body in the tarp and loaded it into a pickup truck. They drove to a cul-de-sac where they dumped the torso and set it on fire using gasoline.
The following day, utility workers discovered the burned torso. Sorensen's head was later found in the Rouge River, nearly 15 miles from where the torso had been disposed of. Authorities later charged Orlewicz and Letkemann with first-degree murder and mutilation of a corpse.
Jean Pierre Orlewicz was arrested on November 12, 2007, just five days after the murder. He was charged with several offenses, including premeditated murder. After a trial, he was found guilty of all charges on April 16, 2008. On May 12, 2008, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as well as an additional ten years for mutilation of a corpse. Alexander Letkemann, Orlewicz's co-defendant, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of 20 to 30 years in prison for his role in the crime.
