— Jason Todd Ready
Jason Todd Ready was born on February 17, 1973. He grew up in Mulberry, Florida, and attended Mulberry High School. During his high school years, Ready had some trouble with the law. After completing school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He went through basic training at MCRD Parris Island and later attended the School of Infantry in North Carolina. Ready achieved the rank of lance corporal while serving in the military.
His time in the Marine Corps was marked by several disciplinary issues. Ready faced court-martial twice for various offenses, which included theft and assault. These incidents led to a bad conduct discharge from the Marine Corps in 1996.
After leaving the military, Ready became involved in politics and anti-immigration activism. He was known for founding militia groups, including the U.S. Border Guard, which patrolled the Arizona-Mexico border. Ready was also connected to neo-Nazi organizations. He participated in political campaigns and sought elected office, including a run for sheriff in Pinal County, Arizona.
In his personal life, Ready had been married to Arline Lindgren, but they divorced in 2003. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and later described himself as a "recovering Mormon." Before moving in with his girlfriend, Lisa Mederos, he worked at an AutoZone auto parts store.
Ready was politically active and held strong anti-immigration views. He was known to make headlines with his controversial opinions and actions related to illegal immigration. Throughout his life, he was often noted for his extreme beliefs and affiliations.
On May 2, 2012, Jason Todd Ready committed a mass shooting at his home in Gilbert, Arizona. He shot and killed four people: his girlfriend, Lisa Mederos, her daughter, Amber Mederos, Amber’s fiancé, Jim Hiott, and Amber’s 15-month-old daughter, Lilly.
The attack began following an argument in the house. At around 1 p.m., Lisa placed a 911 call, indicating a dispute was taking place. Gunfire interrupted the call. Evidence suggests that Ready shot either Amber or Lilly first at the front door when they arrived at the house. Lisa, still on the phone with the operator, attempted to navigate the home and came into view of Ready. He shot her in the face and then again in the back of the head as she fell.
Jim Hiott was outside, talking on his phone. After hearing the shots, he moved towards the house but was shot in the back of the head. After killing the four family members, Ready took his own life with the same firearm.
Inside the home, police recovered two handguns, a shotgun, and several military items, including grenades. A teenage daughter of Lisa who was present during the incident managed to survive without injury.
By the end of the shooting, four people had lost their lives, and Ready had turned the gun on himself.
