— Jason James Mahn
Jason James Mahn was born on April 2, 1973, in Wisconsin. In 1974, when he was just a toddler, his parents divorced. After the divorce, Mahn lost contact with his father, Michael Mahn. This absence likely affected him as he grew up.
Mahn spent his childhood primarily in Texas. His upbringing might have been difficult, considering he had little relationship with his father. When he turned 18, he made a major life decision to move to Pensacola, Florida. The goal of this move was to reconnect with his father. Mahn moved in with his father, his father’s long-time girlfriend, Debra Shanko, and her teenage son, Anthony Shanko.
In the time leading up to the tragic events of April 1, 1993, Mahn's life included ups and downs. His father once bought a car for him, but later sold it due to financial difficulties. This event seemed to be a source of frustration for Mahn. There were also tensions in their relationship, as Mahn struggled with feelings of anger and disappointment toward his father. Mahn’s attempts to build a father-son bond did not seem to go well.
On April 1, 1993, Jason James Mahn committed two murders in Escambia County, Florida. His first victim was Debra Shanko, his father's long-time girlfriend. The second victim was her teenage son, Anthony Shanko.
Mahn's father had bought a car for him but later had to sell it due to repair costs. That night, Mahn was frustrated after his father sold the car. Around 11:00 p.m., he used a kitchen knife to stab Anthony in his bedroom. Debra rushed in after hearing her son scream and was also stabbed by Mahn.
After the attacks, Mahn intended to escape in his father's car but could not find the keys. Debra, who was still alive at that time, told him to take her car to flee. He broke a window to get inside her car and drove away, taking $400 from her bank bag.
When Mahn's father returned home after a night out, he found blood in the house and discovered Debra's body. Anthony, although injured, informed his father that Mahn was the one who hurt them.
Police arrested Mahn later in Oklahoma. He confessed to the murders and stated that he acted out of hate for his father and frustration over his life. He also admitted to using drugs during that time.
Mahn faced trial and was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery. He was sentenced to death for both murders on February 23, 1994.
