May 11, 2007Jason Allen Rose was born in 1986. He had a troubled childhood and spent some of his early years in foster care. In the weeks before a tragic event in his life, he moved into an apartment complex called Boardwalk Apartments located in Douglas County, Kansas.
His time at the Boardwalk Apartments was short-lived. Just weeks after moving in, he became involved in a serious incident that brought significant attention to him and the community.
On October 7, 2005, Jason Allen Rose set fire to the Boardwalk Apartments in Douglas County, Kansas. This fire led to the deaths of three people: Nicole Bingham, a 21-year-old college student; Helen "Yolanda" Riddle, a 33-year-old social worker; and Jose Gonzalez, a 50-year-old electrician. In addition to these fatalities, the fire injured 17 other individuals.
Just four days later, on October 11, police arrested Rose. He faced various charges including three counts of involuntary manslaughter, one count of aggravated arson, and seven counts of aggravated battery. A trial took place, and on May 11, 2007, the jury convicted Rose on the charges, excluding first-degree murder.
Jason Rose was sentenced on June 18, 2007, to 10 years and two months in prison. This sentence was the maximum he could receive under Kansas law for the crimes committed. The law restricts the total length of sentences for multiple convictions to double that of the most serious charge, which in this case was the aggravated arson.
During the sentencing, family members of the victims spoke of their pain and loss, questioning whether the punishment matched the tragedy of what had happened. Rose displayed little emotion throughout the proceedings and chose not to make a statement at his sentencing. After serving time, he will be on supervised release for three years.
