murder story
In September 2021, Jason Alan Thornburg committed a series of murders in Fort Worth, Texas. Over a week, he killed three individuals in a local inn. The first victim was 42-year-old David Lueras. Thornburg shared a room with him and murdered him by slitting his throat. After killing Lueras, Thornburg dismembered the body and reportedly consumed a part of his heart.
Two days after Lueras's murder, Thornburg killed 34-year-old Lauren Phillips. He again slit her throat. Following her, he targeted 33-year-old Maricruz Mathis, whom he killed after strangling and stabbing her. After each murder, Thornburg dismembered the bodies and stored the parts in a bin. He eventually disposed of the remains in a dumpster and set them on fire. This fire drew the attention of nearby residents and led to the discovery of the bodies.
The police found the remains on September 22, 2021. Initially, they identified Lueras, but there was confusion over the identities of the two women. Thornburg was arrested five days later. Following his arrest, he confessed not only to these murders but also to two additional ones. One was in Arizona in 2017, when he killed his girlfriend, Tanya Begay. The other was his former roommate, Mark Jewell, who died in May 2021 under suspicious circumstances.
In December 2021, Thornburg was formally indicted on three counts of capital murder. By May 2022, prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty. During his trial in November 2024, he argued insanity due to religious delusions, but the prosecution countered that he acted with intent and foresight. On November 20, 2024, Thornburg was found guilty of all charges, and on December 4, he was sentenced to death. He remains incarcerated on death row at the Allan B. Polunsky Unit in Texas.
