Murder Story

On 14 October 2011, Kevin Carter, age 30, was found dead in a flat on Sweyn Road in Margate. Janice Carter, born in 1982, was arrested the same day.

The couple had a long history of domestic violence. They had divorced three years earlier and had recently got back together. On the day of his death he had just been released from prison on condition that he was electronically tagged.

Officials from G4S had come to fit the monitoring device. The pair argued about where the tracker should be placed. The argument turned violent.

Janice Carter admitted stabbing Kevin Carter and said she had acted in self-defence. Reports state the method of death as stabbing with a knife. One source gives the number of stab wounds as 19.

A pathologist said some wounds had penetrated the heart and lung and had severed an artery. After the attack, Janice went to her sister’s home and told her, “I’ve killed him. I’ve stabbed him. I think he’s dead.” Her brother-in-law then went to the flat and found Kevin Carter on the kitchen floor with a kitchen knife nearby.

At Canterbury Crown Court a jury found Janice Carter guilty of murder. On 3 April 2012 she was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 12 years. The judge said it started as self-defence but had turned into an attack.
