Bio

James Samuel Walraven was born on May 11, 1949, in Macon, Georgia. He was an only child. As a young boy, he was reported to be withdrawn but well-behaved. He had a quiet nature. However, during his junior year of high school, he began to develop emotional problems. His mother later testified that his father struggled with alcoholism and was abusive towards the family. This led to his parents getting a divorce.

As he grew older, Walraven faced challenges finding work. He became unemployed and spent time at public tennis courts in Atlanta and DeKalb County. He often felt inadequate, especially around women, and he expressed these feelings to doctors and strangers. Throughout his life, he was committed to mental institutions several times.

In June 1980, Walraven was arrested for pointing a gun at a man named Jeff Campbell, who occasionally played tennis with him. Campbell described Walraven as moody and unstable. These incidents indicated that Walraven had a troubled life, marked by emotional difficulties and instability.

Murder Story

James Samuel Walraven was suspected of several murders in Georgia during the early 1980s. On April 15, 1981, police found 22-year-old Louise DalSanto dead in her bathtub at Woodcreek Apartments. She had been strangled. Later, on May 29, another young woman, 22-year-old Giselle Yvonne Clardy, was discovered murdered in her bathtub at Cherry Hill Apartments. Both women had also been raped before their deaths. On June 15, 1981, 22-year-old Patricia Berry was also found dead in her bathtub at Windermere Apartments, strangled with her own hair ribbon.

As the investigation progressed, police noticed similarities between these cases. They reviewed police reports for leads which included incidents involving a man who had attacked two other women in their apartments prior to the murders. These reports helped law enforcement create a composite sketch of the suspect.

This investigation led to a tip about James Walraven, a 32-year-old unemployed man who often played tennis in the area. He was arrested on July 14, 1981, and taken to the DeKalb County Jail. During questioning, he made odd claims about his sexual history.

Walraven's trial began in November 1981. Testimony from fellow inmates and witnesses connected him to the murders. A mechanic testified to seeing Walraven with Clardy just before her death. The two women who had been attacked also identified him as their assailant. Walraven's defense argued that there was no physical evidence linking him to the crimes.

On November 16, the jury found Walraven guilty. He was initially sentenced to death. However, a retrial took place after a legal motion argued that a statement he made in jail should not have been used as evidence. As a result, in 1983, his death sentence was changed to a life sentence.

James Samuel Walraven died in prison on April 16, 2004. He committed suicide by hanging himself with a torn bed sheet in his cell at Jimmy Autry State Prison.
