April 7, 2005James Granvil Wallace was born on April 28, 1950. He grew up in a difficult family environment in the United States. His parents had severe issues, including mental illness and substance abuse. His mother was known to have been in and out of mental hospitals and was diagnosed with various psychological problems. His father also had a history of alcohol abuse, which led to violent behavior in the household.
Wallace's childhood was chaotic. He was exposed to a lot of emotional and physical violence between his parents. This unstable environment likely had a lasting impact on him. Wallace started using substances such as glue and gasoline at a very young age. These experiences contributed to a troubled upbringing.
As a young adult, Wallace seemed to struggle with personal relationships. He moved in with a woman named Susan Insalaco and her two children, Anna and Gabe. The family lived in Tucson, Arizona. Wallace's relationship with Susan was marked by conflicts, and there were signs of tension leading up to the events of February 1984.
Throughout his life, Wallace faced many challenges. These included his chaotic family background, substance abuse, and relationship troubles. These factors played a significant role in shaping his early life and experiences.
On February 1, 1984, James Granvil Wallace committed a series of murders in Pima County, Arizona. He was living with his girlfriend, Susan Insalaco, and her two children, Anna, 16, and Gabe, 12. On the night before the murders, Wallace and Susan had a heated argument. Susan told him that he had to move out the next day.
The following day, Wallace decided to stay in the home instead of leaving. He waited for the children to return from school. Anna was the first to come home that afternoon. Wallace hid behind the door with a baseball bat. When Anna entered, he attacked her, striking her multiple times until the bat broke. He then used the broken bat to inflict fatal injuries on her.
After Anna, Gabe came home from school. Wallace attacked him with a steel pipe wrench, hitting him several times and causing severe injuries that resulted in his death. Two hours later, Susan returned from work. When she asked him why he had not left, Wallace followed her into the kitchen and killed her using the same wrench.
After the murders, Wallace took some money from Susan's wallet and bought some alcohol. He spent the night at a friend's house. The next day, he turned himself in to the police and confessed to the crimes. He was arrested and later pleaded guilty to the murders. On April 7, 2005, he was sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole on March 27, 2012.
