July 21, 2010James A. Soares Jr. was born in 1984. He grew up in Warren, Rhode Island, in a household with his parents, James A. Soares Sr. and Marian F. Soares. James Jr. lived with his parents throughout his childhood and into adulthood. He was known to have conflicts with them, especially in his teenage years.
As he grew older, James Jr. faced challenges with drug addiction, particularly cocaine. His parents tried to help him despite his struggles. They allowed him to continue living with them, even after he turned 20. They also opened their home to his girlfriend, who lived with them as well.
His father and mother had been arrested in the past for drug possession. In 2002, James Sr. faced charges related to illegal firearms possession and was sentenced to home confinement and probation.
On July 9, 2008, James A. Soares Jr. killed his parents, James A. Soares Sr. and Marian F. Soares, at their home in Warren, Rhode Island. He used a garden hoe to bludgeon them to death. After the murders, he concealed their bodies in a septic tank in the backyard. The couple was reported missing a week later, on July 15, when they did not attend a family reunion.

On July 26, 2008, police excavated the backyard and discovered the bodies of James Sr. and Marian in the septic tank. The following day, authorities arrested James A. Soares Jr. and charged him with two counts of murder. He was taken into custody and held without bail.
Throughout the investigation, Soares Jr. provided inconsistent statements about his parents' whereabouts. Initially, he claimed they were on a trip. As the investigation progressed, he changed his story multiple times before admitting that he had killed them.
The medical examiner later determined that the couple died from blunt-force trauma to the head. On July 21, 2010, Soares Jr. pleaded guilty and received two consecutive life sentences, with a minimum of 40 years before being eligible for parole.
