— Ilya Aleksandrovich Aseyev
Ilya Aleksandrovich Aseyev was born on July 18, 1988. His father was Alexander Aseyev. His mother, Tatyana Aseeva, worked as a nurse.
Alexander Aseyev had multiple convictions, including three for armed robbery. He served about 14 years in prison. Ilya grew up with this family background.
School reports said Ilya was a good and diligent boy. He earned mostly A's and B's. He wanted to serve in the army.
After high school, Ilya enrolled in the Yegoryevsk Aviation Technical College. He studied there for about six months and then left because of problems with drafting. Later he entered the 31st State Vocational School of Yegoryevsk.
At the vocational school he specialized in electrical equipment repair and maintenance. He graduated with honors. In 2007 he was drafted into the Russian Armed Forces.
In the army he served in the chemical troops. His commanders noted he was a good shot and learned military skills quickly. They offered him a contract in the GRU special forces, but he declined and returned home.
Back home, a friend helped him get a job at a private security company. He tried to join the police patrol service but was not accepted, reportedly because of his father's criminal record.
Ilya was a keen hunter. He had a license and permits to buy, store, and carry firearms. He owned a Vepr VPO-205 self-loading carbine.
Before later events, he lived alone in his mother's apartment. His mother cared for a sick grandmother.
On the night of May 8, 2016, in the village of Chelokhovo in the Yegoryevsk district of Moscow region, Ilya Aseyev shot and killed five members of the "Wild at Heart" biker club after a drinking session and a conflict. He used a semi-automatic rifle and then left the scene. He was detained by police shortly after and later confessed to the shooting. The media called him the "Yegorevsky shooter."
Bikers had camped near an abandoned brewery to prepare for Victory Day and the start of the motorcycle season. During the gathering a quarrel started and Aseyev was beaten and had his helmet taken, according to reports. He left around 2:30 a.m., went home, took a carbine (reported as a Vepr-12 or Saiga in different sources), and returned about an hour later. Using a laser sight, he fired on the people gathered at the camp. The shooting lasted about 15 seconds. The victims named in reports were Oleg Eremin, Sergei Flyagin, Alexei Eshmakov, Anatoly Medvedev, and Sergei Rubin.
Two women, Anastasia and Svetlana, were present and were not killed. They later drove with Aseyev away from the scene and then called the police from a dacha. Law enforcement later found the rifle in Aseyev’s Daewoo Nexia.
The Yegoryevsk Investigative Department opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code. During questioning Aseyev confessed and described the events. The Yegoryevsk city court placed him in detention. The Moscow Region Prosecutor’s Office approved the indictment on March 27, 2017, and the case was sent to the Moscow Regional Court on April 6, 2017. The case file had ten volumes and the trial was held in a closed session with a jury.
On November 1, 2017, the jury found Aseyev guilty and stated he did not deserve leniency. On November 20, 2017, the Moscow Regional Court sentenced him to life imprisonment in a special regime penal colony and ordered compensation to the victims’ families. On May 9, 2018, Aseyev committed suicide in his cell at Pre-trial Detention Center No. 12 in Moscow.
