Bio

Humberto de la Torre was born in 1961. He grew up in Los Angeles, California. Humberto was part of a large family and lived with relatives in a community where many residents shared the same background. His family came from the rural town of El Salitre in Mexico. This created a close-knit environment where many families knew each other well.

As a child, Humberto faced challenges. He often struggled with his family relationships, particularly with his uncle, Mateo de la Torre. Mateo managed the Dorothy Mae Apartment Hotel, where Humberto lived. Their relationship became tense over time due to disputes about Humberto's behavior.

Humberto was involved in activities that caused concern for his family. He had issues with a street gang and was known to smoke marijuana. His interests included spray painting graffiti. These behaviors led to arguments between him and his uncle, who was trying to guide him toward a better path.

During the years leading up to 1982, Humberto's life took a turn as he became more troubled. The problems with his uncle worsened, leading to significant tension and conflict between them. This period in his life influenced his decisions and actions later on.

By the time he reached his early twenties, Humberto was struggling to find direction. His life experiences shaped him in ways that would later have serious consequences. In 1982, at the age of 21, his conflicts would lead to a tragic event that would change many lives forever.

Murder Story

On September 4, 1982, Humberto de la Torre set fire to the Dorothy Mae Apartment Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This action resulted from a dispute he had with his uncle, who managed the building. The fire broke out early in the morning and quickly spread through the three-story structure. Twenty-five residents lost their lives, including pregnant women and children. Additionally, thirty-six people suffered injuries, with some dying in the days following the fire.

In December 1983, Humberto was arrested in Texas. He later pleaded guilty to 25 counts of first-degree murder. On June 29, 1985, he was sentenced to 625 years to life in prison by a Superior Court judge. At the time, this case was one of the deadliest residential fires in Los Angeles history. The Dorothy Mae fire devastated a closely-knit community where many of the victims were related and came from the same rural town in Mexico. Humberto de la Torre is currently serving his sentence at Folsom Prison.
