July 17, 1985Herbert A. Underwood was born on July 11, 1960. His early life details are not widely documented. There is limited information regarding his family background and childhood experiences.
Underwood grew up in Indiana, where he faced various challenges common in many urban environments. His youth was influenced by the social and economic factors of the time. He later became involved in activities that led to significant legal troubles.
On June 5, 1984, Herbert A. Underwood, along with Rick Huffman and Rick Asbury, was involved in the murder of Kerry Golden in Marion County, Indiana. The night began at a bar where Golden, who was carrying a large sum of money and marijuana, met Huffman and Underwood. After spending time together in the bar, they all left in Huffman's car.
At some point during the drive, Huffman stopped the car in a secluded area. Underwood exited the vehicle and forcibly pulled Golden out. Both Underwood and Huffman demanded that Golden give up his marijuana. They then attacked him, beating him with their fists and kicking him. Underwood also removed Golden's clothing and took money from his pockets.
Huffman retrieved a tire iron from the car's trunk. Together, Underwood and Huffman struck Golden with it. Asbury, who was still nearby, also struck Golden with the tire iron. Their actions eventually led to Golden's death from severe injuries.
After the murder, the three men drove away from the scene. The crime was later brought to the attention of law enforcement, which led to Underwood's arrest. He was charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, and conspiracy to commit murder and robbery.
Underwood was initially sentenced to death on August 23, 1985. However, after a series of trials and appeals, his sentence was commuted to life in prison on April 21, 1995. Underwood's case involved multiple trials, including acquittals on some charges and findings of hung juries on others before ultimately being convicted of murder.
