Heather Nicole Matthews was born on February 27, 1972, in Ohio, United States. There is limited publicly available information regarding her early childhood, education, or family life. By the early 1990s, Matthews had become involved with a group of troubled youths in Dayton, known later in the media as the “Downtown Posse.”
At the time of the killings, Matthews was 20 years old, making her the oldest member of the group. She was romantically involved with 17-year-old DeMarcus Maurice Smith, another participant in the crimes. Matthews had also previously been in a relationship with Jeffrey Wright, one of the later victims of the group. She was closely associated with group leader Marvallous Keene and fellow member Laura Taylor.
There are no publicly recorded major criminal offenses tied to Matthews before December 1992, although she was embedded in a social environment that frequently involved drugs, manipulation, and casual criminal behavior. In this environment, relationships and loyalty to the group seemed to override moral restraint or fear of consequence.
By late December 1992, Matthews was fully immersed in the gang’s criminal plans. She did not fire any weapons during the murders but played an active role in luring victims, planning robberies, and participating in the group’s movements during the killing spree. Her involvement would lead to two convictions for aggravated murder and a sentence that ensured she would spend the rest of her life in prison.
murder story
Heather Matthews was one of four perpetrators in the 1992 Dayton Christmas murders, a 72-hour killing spree that claimed six lives and injured two others between December 24 and December 26, 1992. The group—Marvallous Keene (19), Laura Taylor (16), DeMarcus Smith (17), and Heather Matthews (20)—called themselves the “Downtown Posse.” Their motivations included robbery, retaliation, and silencing potential witnesses.
Matthews, along with Keene and Taylor, lured 34-year-old Joseph Wilkerson under the pretense of participating in group sex. Once inside his home, they tied him to his bed using electrical cords. While Matthews and Taylor ransacked the home, Keene shot Wilkerson in the chest using a .32 caliber Derringer pistol. Taylor then delivered a second gunshot to Wilkerson’s head. The trio stole items and fled in one of Wilkerson’s cars.
Later that day, joined by Smith, the group encountered 18-year-old Danita Gullette at a payphone. Smith and Keene held her at gunpoint and robbed her of her jacket and shoes before fatally shooting her. At the time, Gullette was a high school senior and mother of a two-year-old daughter. Her personal belongings were later worn by Taylor and Smith.
That night, Smith shot Matthews’ ex-boyfriend Jeffrey Wright four times in the legs. Wright managed to escape and survive the shooting. The attack was apparently motivated by a personal confrontation.
On Christmas Day, Laura Taylor lured her ex-boyfriend Richmond Maddox into a drive. While he was driving, Taylor fatally shot him in the head. Matthews followed in a separate vehicle with the rest of the group. Maddox’s body was later found in a crashed vehicle.
In the early morning hours, the group robbed a grocery store where 38-year-old Sarah Abraham was working. Keene and Smith entered with weapons and demanded money. After Abraham complied, Keene shot her in the head. She died four days later. A customer, Jones Pettus, was also shot but survived.
Later that same day, the group lured two acquaintances—Marvin Washington (18) and Wendy Cottrill (16)—to a gravel pit, fearing they might report them to police. While the victims pleaded for their lives, Keene shot Cottrill and Smith shot Washington. Their bodies were found five days later. Cottrill was reportedly three months pregnant.
Police arrested Matthews, Keene, and Taylor on December 26, 1992, after spotting the group in a stolen vehicle and tracing them back to Wilkerson’s car. Smith was arrested shortly afterward.
Matthews and Keene were arraigned in Dayton Municipal Court on multiple charges, including aggravated murder. The prosecutor initially sought the death penalty for both adult defendants. However, Matthews later accepted a plea bargain, which removed the death penalty in exchange for guilty pleas.
In December 1993, Heather Matthews was convicted of two counts of aggravated murder and received two consecutive life sentences, totaling 194 years in prison. She would not be eligible for parole for 53 years.
Co-defendants Smith and Taylor, both juveniles, were tried as adults and received life sentences without parole eligibility for over 100 years. Marvallous Keene was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection on July 21, 2009.
As of 2025, Heather Nicole Matthews remains imprisoned at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville. She did not appeal her sentence. According to reports, she has participated in prison programming but remains legally ineligible for parole until at least 2046.
