1964 - 1967Hans van Zon was born on March 6, 1941, in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was a quiet child, often drifting into his own thoughts. People who knew him described him as selfish, largely because his mother made him feel like he was the most important person in the world. His childhood was not marked by academic success. He had average grades and did not excel in school.
As Hans grew older, he struggled to find stable work. He was fired from several jobs due to dishonesty and petty theft. His adult life was characterized by a series of dead-end jobs and deception. He often made up stories about himself, claiming to have many impressive occupations, such as working for the CIA or being a fashion designer. Despite these tall tales, he never left the fantasy world he created for himself.
At 16, Hans moved to Amsterdam. He changed his appearance, buying expensive clothes in an attempt to live a more glamorous life. It was at this point that he began to engage in dishonest behavior as a con man. He would often pose as a student and trick kind-hearted people into giving him money for a fictional trip home.
Hans was also known for his bisexuality. He had relationships with both men and women. His charm and looks seemed to attract many people, allowing him to manipulate those around him. He continued to lead a life filled with lies and deceit until he became involved in serious crimes later in his life.
Hans van Zon is known for committing a series of murders in Amsterdam, Netherlands, between 1964 and 1967. His first victim was Elly Hager-Segor. After a date in July 1964, when she rejected his advances, he strangled her and then cut her throat with a bread knife.
In 1965, he killed Claude Berkeley, a gay film director. Details about this murder are less clear, but it is recorded that he committed the crime in Amsterdam.
Later, Hans attempted to murder his wife, Cloroline Gigi, but she reported him to the police. He served time in jail but was released after some weeks. Soon after, he murdered his girlfriend, Coby van der Voort, on April 19, 1967. He drugged her with barbiturates, then bludgeoned her with a lead pipe and stabbed her.
On May 31, 1967, he entered a fireworks shop run by 80-year-old Jan Donse and killed him with the same lead pipe. In August of the same year, he murdered Reyer de Bruin, a farmer, crushing his skull and slitting his throat.
The end of his crime spree came when he attacked an older woman named Woortmeyer. She survived the attack and was able to identify him to the police. After his arrest, he claimed another man, Oude Nol, had blackmailed him into committing some of the murders. In 1967, Hans van Zon was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. His accomplice received a seven-year sentence. Hans was released from prison in 1986 and died on May 11, 1998.
