August 22, 1985Gregory Thompson was born on December 13, 1961. He faced many challenges in his early life. When he was just three years old, his mother passed away. After her death, Thompson was raised by his grandmother. Unfortunately, his grandmother struggled with alcohol dependence and often stayed in bed for long periods. During this time, she sometimes did not provide enough food for Thompson and his siblings.
Thompson witnessed violence in his family. He saw several beatings of family members and even witnessed the brutal assault of his mother. As a child, he often showed signs of emotional distress. His grandmother would yell at him, and in response, he would bang his head against the wall in a troubled attempt to cope. At school, he cried frequently, earning the nickname "Fire Engine" because of the loud sounds he made when he cried.
Tragedy continued to strike Thompson's life. By the age of 23, he had suffered four major head injuries. One significant incident occurred when he was 15; he was in a car accident and was thrown through the windshield. This event caused him to have a severe seizure. Later, while serving in the military, he was attacked by a group of men wielding crowbars and experienced another seizure as a result.
After this military incident, those close to him noticed changes in his behavior. His girlfriend described him as caring and sensitive, but after the injury, he became paranoid and overly anxious about their safety. Although he was advised to see a psychiatrist during his military service, he was too afraid to obtain help.
When he returned home, his grandmother noticed he would often stare into space and mumble to himself. She felt he had changed significantly. His sister also described his behavior after this time as bizarre and paranoid. She became worried about him and urged their grandmother to seek treatment for Thompson.
Throughout this time, Gregory Thompson did not receive any medical treatment for his mental health problems. He eventually developed delusions and hallucinations, leading to a diagnosis of undifferentiated schizophrenia. His mental health continued to deteriorate, especially after he was incarcerated.
On January 1, 1985, Gregory Thompson, along with a juvenile accomplice, kidnapped Brenda Blanton Lane from the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Shelbyville, Tennessee. They threatened her with a knife and forced her to drive to a secluded area outside Manchester.
Once they arrived at the remote location, Thompson stabbed Brenda Lane multiple times in the back. After the attack, he left her to die alone. The motive behind the murder was to steal her car. Thompson and his partner planned to use the car to return to Georgia.
The police discovered Brenda Lane's body shortly after the crime. The day after the murder, on January 2, Thompson was arrested. While in custody, he confessed to the crime and made a statement admitting his guilt.
On August 22, 1985, Gregory Thompson was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.
