1997Gregory Robinson was born on September 9, 1959. He grew up in a challenging environment in Memphis, Tennessee. He was known to be involved with gangs from a young age. Growing up in an area where gang culture was prevalent, Robinson’s formative years were influenced by this environment.
As a teenager, there was a lack of stability in his life. He struggled with education and dropped out of school in the ninth grade. Following his departure from school, he worked various jobs, including some time spent with his father, who had a welding business. Reports indicate that Robinson had a learning disability, which likely affected his academic performance and contributed to his life choices.
Robinson became associated with the Gangster Disciples, a gang that operated in the Memphis area. His involvement with the gang escalated over time, and he held a significant position within its hierarchy.
Gregory Robinson was involved in a serious crime that took place in Shelby County, Tennessee, on May 1, 1997. The incident stemmed from a conflict between two rival gangs. Vernon Green, an innocent bystander, became a victim of this gang violence.
During an argument between gang members, Robinson allegedly ordered his gang to "snatch up" Green, believing he was associated with the rival gang known as the Vice Lords. Despite Green's lack of involvement, he was captured and brought to a nearby apartment.
For approximately two to two-and-a-half hours, gang members, following Robinson's orders, physically assaulted Green. They beat him and interrogated him about the whereabouts of the rival gang members. Following this abusive interrogation, Robinson instructed them to "take him fishing," which code for taking someone out to harm them.
Green was then taken to Jessie Turner Park, where the gang members continued to assault him. Multiple gunshots were fired, and Green's body was discovered early the next morning.
Robinson was ultimately tried and found guilty of orchestrating the murder. The evidence presented at trial included testimonies from former gang members who described the events leading up to the murder. In November 1998, Robinson was sentenced to death for his role in the crime.
The case went through appeals and reviews, with various legal arguments presented regarding the nature of the crimes, evidence provided during the trial, and issues related to the prosecutions of his co-defendants. However, the original conviction and sentence were upheld by the Tennessee Supreme Court.
