1999“I would like to say I apologize to Carol Skjerva, the girl that I murdered, her family and her friends. This is the punishment that I deserve. I'm taking responsibility for my actions. I want everybody to know I'm not a volunteer but this is my responsibility I have to take.”
— Glen James Ocha
Glen James Ocha was born on October 27, 1957. As a young adult, Ocha joined the Army but was given a general discharge after two years due to drug use. After leaving the military, he struggled with substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs. His life continued to be unstable, as he was often in and out of trouble with the law.
Ocha dropped out of school in the tenth grade, which limited his opportunities. He also showed signs of suicidal behavior from a young age. There were records of him asking police to shoot him during a confrontation in 1978.
He worked various jobs, including one at a bar in Kissimmee, Florida, where he was employed as an engraver. This was where he would meet Carol Skjerva, a convenience store worker, in 1999. At that time, Ocha was known to be struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.
On October 5, 1999, Glen James Ocha met 28-year-old Carol Skjerva at a bar in Kissimmee, Florida. Both were intoxicated, and Skjerva drove Ocha to his home in Buenaventura Lakes. They engaged in consensual sex. Afterward, Skjerva made a comment about telling her boyfriend about the encounter and mocked Ocha’s anatomy. This enraged him.
Ocha attempted to strangle Skjerva three times but grew tired before he could kill her. In his anger, he then used a rope to hang her from a kitchen door. As she choked to death, Ocha drank a beer. After hiding her body in a home entertainment system in his garage, he took Skjerva's car and drove to Daytona Beach.
The next day, Ocha was arrested for disorderly intoxication. During this arrest, he confessed to Skjerva's murder. He pleaded guilty in court and did not allow a public defender to present any evidence that could help him avoid the death penalty. After his conviction was affirmed by the Supreme Court in 2002, he dropped all appeals and dismissed his attorneys.
Ocha’s execution took place on April 5, 2005, by lethal injection in Florida. He was 47 years old at the time of his death. Before his execution, he expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to Skjerva and her family. His last meal included a chicken breast, potato salad, corn, two biscuits, and a large glass of Pepsi. Ocha was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m.
