2003Giuseppe Leotta was born in 1971 and lived in the Aci Castello area of Sicily. He worked short-term jobs for the town, including work connected to municipal services.
On May 2, 2003, Giuseppe Leotta went to the town hall in Aci Castello, Sicily, because of problems with his job situation. He was reportedly angry that he had not received the position he wanted. Leotta entered the mayor’s office and shot Mayor Michele Toscano. He then continued firing in and around the municipal offices, killing Rita Mammino, Maria Marta Cappadonna, Salvatore Li Volsi, and Giuseppe Castorina. At least one other person was injured.
The shooting caused panic across the town. Police launched a manhunt, blocked roads, and warned people to stay indoors. Later that same day, Leotta fled to Vittoria, where he died by suicide inside a church. Because he killed himself after the massacre, he was never arrested or tried.
