Bio

Gerard Toal was born in 1909 in Ireland. Details about his early life are not well documented, but he grew up in the early 20th century. As a young man, he became a chauffeur and odd job man.

In 1927, when he was eighteen years old, Toal worked for Father McKeown, who was a local priest. Alongside him was Mary Callan, a thirty-six-year-old housekeeper. Their work and interactions were likely routine, but it was known that they did not get along well.

On May 27, 1927, Father McKeown returned home to find that Mary Callan had disappeared. Her bicycle was also missing, leading people to think she had gone home. However, she was not seen alive again. Initially, there was no suspicion on Toal, even though he and Mary had conflicts.

The police began searching for her. They found part of a woman's bicycle in Toal's room. He said he had found it, but there was no evidence to accuse him at that time. Toal was released but was watched carefully.

In April of the following year, he attempted to leave the farm to emigrate to Canada. Shortly after, he was arrested for theft in a nearby town. This led police to conduct a more thorough search of Father McKeown's farmhouse. They found more bicycle parts and some burnt clothing.

As the investigation continued, the body of Mary Callan was discovered in a nearby quarry. Toal eventually confessed to strangling her during a quarrel. He mentioned that he had thrown her body into the water-filled quarry. After his confession, he was tried and convicted in Dublin.

Murder Story

On May 27, 1927, Mary Callan, a 36-year-old housekeeper, disappeared from her job at a priest's house in Faughart, County Louth, Ireland. Her bicycle was missing, and at first, it was thought that she had cycled home. However, she was never seen alive again. Mary and Gerard Toal, an 18-year-old chauffeur and odd job man who also worked for the priest, did not get along, but Toal was not immediately suspected.

The police searched the area but found no evidence linking Toal to her disappearance at first. They did discover part of a woman's bicycle in his room, which he claimed to have found. Despite this, he was released but remained under observation.

In April 1928, a year after Mary’s disappearance, Toal attempted to leave for Canada but was arrested for theft in a nearby town. This led the police to conduct a more detailed search of the priest’s farmhouse. During this search, they found more bicycle parts and some burnt female clothing. Eventually, the decomposed body of Mary Callan was discovered in a nearby quarry.

Gerard Toal confessed to the murder, stating that he had strangled Mary during a quarrel and then thrown her body into the water-filled quarry. His confession led to his conviction at Dublin Assizes in July 1928. He was executed by hanging on August 29, 1928.
