— Gerald Patrick Lewis
Gerald Patrick Lewis was born on August 10, 1965, in Jacksonville, Florida. His family moved between Georgia and Massachusetts during his childhood. His parents separated when he was young, and his early life was described as unstable. By his teenage years and early adulthood, Lewis had started committing crimes. In 1987, he attacked a five-year-old girl in Massachusetts and was convicted of assault with intent to murder. He later served time in a mental hospital and prison.
In the early 1990s, Lewis spent time in Georgia, where he was imprisoned for crimes including theft, weapons offenses, and driving under the influence. He was released in November 1997 and later moved to Alabama.
Gerald Patrick Lewis’s known murder history became clear only after the 1998 murder of Kathleen Bracken in Mobile, Alabama. Bracken was found dead inside a room at the Twilite Motel in April 1998. Witnesses described a man and a pickup truck seen near the motel, and investigators eventually connected those details to Lewis. A cigarette butt found in Bracken’s room also produced DNA evidence that matched him.
After police questioned him, Lewis confessed to Bracken’s murder and began giving information about other killings. He admitted that he had killed Misty McGugin in Alabama earlier in 1998. McGugin had disappeared after going to meet a client, and her car was later found abandoned. Lewis led investigators to her remains in Baldwin County. He was later convicted and sentenced to death for her murder.
Lewis also confessed to killing Peggy Lynn Grimes in Georgia in 1993. Grimes was pregnant when she disappeared. Her remains were found in Douglas County, but they were not identified for years. After Lewis confessed, investigators re-examined the remains and found fetal bones and injuries consistent with his account. DNA later confirmed the remains belonged to Peggy Grimes. In 2001, Lewis pleaded guilty to multiple charges in her case, including malice murder, felony murder, feticide, aggravated battery, and kidnapping with bodily injury. A Georgia jury later recommended a death sentence.
Lewis admitted to at least one more Georgia murder. He said he picked up a woman in Atlanta in 1993 because he “just wanted to kill her.” He described driving her to a remote area, sexually assaulting her, strangling her, and stabbing her. However, because the location had changed over time, investigators could not immediately confirm every detail or fully identify that victim through his directions.
His case also included evidence of other attacks on women who survived. Court records mention attempted kidnappings and assaults in Georgia and Alabama, including attacks near parking lots. These incidents supported the prosecution’s argument that Lewis had a repeated pattern of targeting women.
In Alabama, Lewis was sentenced to death for Misty McGugin’s murder and received life without parole for Kathleen Bracken’s murder. In Georgia, he received another death sentence for the murder of Peggy Grimes. His appeals continued for years, but he died before any execution could take place.
Gerald Patrick Lewis died in prison on July 25, 2009, while awaiting execution. Reports described him as being on death row at the time of his death. His confirmed convictions and confessions place him among the serial killers who operated across multiple states, with known victims in Alabama and Georgia and additional claimed crimes in Massachusetts.
