— George Sodini
George Sodini was born on September 30, 1960, in the United States. He grew up in a suburban neighborhood and was known to be a quiet child. He had a strong interest in technology. He later became a systems analyst.
Sodini attended a local high school and was described as studious and reserved. He seemed to keep to himself and did not have many close friends. His family life appeared to be complicated, with reports suggesting that he struggled with relationships, particularly with women.
After graduating from high school, he continued his education and started working in the computer field. He was noted for being intelligent but also for feeling disconnected from others. Over time, he became increasingly isolated.
Sodini had not been in a romantic relationship for many years. He expressed feelings of frustration and rejection regarding his attempts to meet women. He documented his struggles online and often wrote about his feelings of loneliness and anger.
In his 40s, he attended self-help seminars aimed at helping men improve their dating lives. However, even after these seminars, he continued to feel unsuccessful in his relationships. His online writings showed a growing resentment towards women, revealing deeper issues with personal connections.
In the years leading up to 2009, Sodini's mental state appeared to decline. He became more withdrawn from social interactions and focused on his feelings of being unwanted. His life details reveal a lonely individual struggling to find a place in society and connect with others.
On August 4, 2009, George Sodini entered an LA Fitness gym in Collier Township, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during a women's aerobics class. He arrived around 8:15 p.m. and placed a duffel bag on the floor before turning off the lights. He took out multiple handguns and began firing indiscriminately into the class.
Sodini reportedly fired at least 52 shots using two 9mm semiautomatic handguns and a .45-caliber revolver. His attack resulted in the deaths of three women: Heidi Overmier, aged 46, Elizabeth Gannon, aged 49, and Jody Billingsley, aged 38. Nine other people were injured in the shooting.
The shooting lasted only a few minutes, after which Sodini took his own life using one of his firearms. He was found dead in the aerobics room, lying on top of one of the guns. Witnesses described the event as chaotic, with many people trying to escape after the gunfire erupted.
Sodini had a note with him that expressed his feelings of anger and rejection toward women. After the shooting, it was revealed that he kept an online diary chronicling his frustrations and thoughts leading up to the attack.
