January 30, 1869George S. Twitchell Jr. was born in 1820. He grew up in a time when many families faced difficulties and challenges. Very little information is available about his early life. However, it is known that he later lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Twitchell married and had a family, but his life was not without struggles. He faced failures in business, which may have added to the stress in his personal life. He lived with his wife and mother-in-law, Mary E. Hill, in the same house in Philadelphia. The relationships within the household would later become significant in his life.
On October 22, 1868, Mary E. Hill was killed in her home located at the northeast corner of Tenth and Pine Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her son-in-law, George S. Twitchell, Jr., and his wife, who was Mary Hill's daughter, were arrested in connection with the murder.
Following the investigation, Twitchell was found guilty of the crime. On January 30, 1869, he was sentenced to death by hanging. As the execution date approached, Twitchell made a statement where he accused his wife of being involved in the murder.
On April 8, 1869, the day he was scheduled to be executed, Twitchell committed suicide in his prison cell. He used prussic acid to take his own life. His wife, meanwhile, was acquitted of all charges related to the murder.
