murder story
On May 20, 1988, Genaro Ruiz Camacho Jr. and two accomplices attempted to kidnap Sam Wright, Evellyn Banks, and her three-year-old son, Andre Banks. During the incident, David L. Wilburn, who worked for Wright and had a mental disability, unexpectedly got involved. Camacho and his accomplices forced Wilburn to lay down in Wright's home and shot him in the back of the head. After killing Wilburn, Wright managed to escape. However, Camacho and his accomplices went on to kidnap Evellyn and her son Andre.
Three days later, authorities found that Evellyn and Andre had been killed. Following these crimes, Camacho fled to Mexico. The FBI learned through an informant that he was in Arcelia, Guerrero State, Mexico. They requested his extradition, but Mexican authorities claimed attempts to arrest him would lead to violence due to control by drug lords in the area. Instead, the FBI created a sting operation to lure Camacho back to the United States, where he was finally arrested as he crossed the border near McAllen, Texas.
Camacho faced trial for the murder of Wilburn and the kidnappings and murders of Evellyn and Andre Banks, as well as the murder of Pamela Miller. He was convicted on these charges and sentenced to death. While on death row, he was also found guilty of federal charges related to the kidnapping and murders, as they had crossed state lines. He received a life sentence for the federal charges.
On August 26, 1998, Camacho had a last meal that included steak, baked potato, salad, and strawberry ice cream. His execution by lethal injection was delayed for two hours due to difficulties locating a suitable vein for the injection. Camacho was 43 years old at the time of his execution.
