Murder Story

On May 13, 1988, Gary Lynn Sterling kidnapped 72-year-old John W. Carty and 52-year-old Deloris June Smith from Carty's home in Navarro County, Texas. After abducting them, Sterling drove both victims to an isolated field. There, he used a car bumper jack to beat them to death. He later stole items from Carty's home, including a car, a television, a shotgun, and a lantern. After the murders, Sterling sold Carty's car for cash.

On May 17, 1988, Sterling was arrested for the murders of 72-year-old William Porter and his brother, 71-year-old Leroy Porter. While in custody for the Porter murders, he confessed to the killings of Carty and Smith. He led police to the bodies of Carty and Smith in a remote area. Sterling was charged with capital murder for the death of Carty.

Sterling's trial began in 1989. The jury found him guilty and sentenced him to death. Afterward, he also pleaded guilty to the murders of the Porter brothers and received two life sentences. Sterling was executed by lethal injection on August 10, 2005, in Texas. He was 38 years old at the time of his execution. His final meal included chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and pecan pie.
