1984Gary Alan Walker was born on September 25, 1953. He grew up in a troubled household with a history of abuse. Walker's early life was marked by a challenging environment, where he faced physical and emotional hardships. He was reportedly subjected to beatings by his stepfather. Additionally, there were claims of an incestuous relationship with his mother during his childhood.
Walker struggled with education and behavioral issues. By the time he was a teenager, he had already encountered the juvenile justice system. His first conviction occurred when he was just 14 years old, for car theft. He had a record that included various convictions related to theft and drug offenses, which resulted in multiple stints in juvenile and adult incarceration.
During his time in and out of the legal system, Walker was also frequently hospitalized for mental health issues. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and experienced symptoms like paranoia and hallucinations. Records indicate he underwent numerous psychiatric evaluations and treatments, including electric shock therapy. Despite these challenges, he was released on parole in early 1984.
In the months leading up to his eventual arrest in June 1984, Walker was living a transient lifestyle, often hitchhiking. His criminal behavior escalated during this time, and he became known for dangerous encounters with others as he moved through Oklahoma.
Gary Alan Walker, known as "The Roaming Rapist," was responsible for a murder spree that occurred in May 1984 across parts of Oklahoma. He was convicted of killing six victims: Eddie O. Cash, Jayne Hilburn, Janet Jewell, Valerie Shaw-Hartzell, Margaret Bell Lydick, and DeRonda Gay Roy.
On May 7, Walker murdered Eddie Cash, a 63-year-old man from Broken Arrow. Cash had picked up Walker, who was hitchhiking, and later that day Walker returned to Cash's home with intent to rob him. Once inside, Walker struck Cash in the head several times with a brick and strangled him with a vacuum cleaner cord. After the attack, Walker stole Cash's van.
On May 14, Walker killed 35-year-old Jayne Hilburn in her home in Vinita. He posed as a potential buyer for her house and attacked her after gaining her trust. He strangled her and stole her car.
Days later, on May 23, Walker abducted Janet Jewell, a 32-year-old mother of three, in Tulsa. He tied her up, repeatedly assaulted her, and ultimately strangled her to death, disposing of her body in a creek near Beggs.
On May 24, he kidnapped Valerie Shaw-Hartzell, a radio news reporter from Tulsa. He forced her to cash checks at banks while threatening her life and eventually killed her, leaving her body in a rural area near Claremore.
Margaret Bell Lydick, a 25-year-old waitress, was another victim of Walker. He raped and murdered her after picking her up from a bar.
Soon after these attacks, Walker attempted to assault DeRonda Gay Roy, a 24-year-old mother. He stripped her and attempted to rape her, but eventually ended up strangling her with her own bra.
Walker was arrested on June 2, 1984, after being identified by surviving victims and through forensic evidence linking him to the crime scenes. He confessed to the murders during his interrogation.
He was convicted of multiple counts of murder, sentenced to death for the murder of Eddie Cash, and received additional sentences for his other crimes. Walker was executed by lethal injection on January 13, 2000, in Oklahoma.
