murder story

Sometime in the autumn of 1989, Garcia Glen White went to a crack house in Houston and had an argument with a 27-year-old prostitute named Greta Williams. In the struggle that followed, Williams was killed, but White was not linked to this crime at that time.

After this incident, White started visiting another crack house. This location was an apartment in northeast Houston, owned by Bonita Edwards, a 38-year-old widow. She had two 16-year-old daughters, Bernette and Annette. The apartment became a common spot for drug users. The daughters were afraid and had even tried to move in with their grandmother because of it. On November 30, White went to the apartment hoping to use drugs and have sex with Bonita. However, he got angry when she refused and pulled out a knife, stabbing her multiple times. The sound of the fight alarmed her daughters, who came out of their rooms. He then sexually assaulted Annette, stabbed her in the chest, and slashed her throat. Afterwards, he did the same to Bernette in the bathroom. After the murders, he covered Annette's body with a blanket and stuffed a towel in Bernette's mouth before leaving.

The bodies were found on December 2, when Bonita’s boyfriend, King Solomon, became concerned and went to check on them. When he knocked and received no answer, he asked neighbors if they had seen the family and then had the maintenance man open the door. Upon entering, Solomon discovered Bonita and Bernette's bodies on the floor and called the police. Investigators found no signs of forced entry, which suggested the victims knew their killer, yet interviews with neighbors yielded no helpful information. The case went cold for six years.

In July 1995, White and an acquaintance named Tecumseh Manuel tried to rob a convenience store, which resulted in the death of the clerk, Hai Van Pham. Both men were arrested. During questioning, Manuel claimed White had confessed to him that he was the murderer of the Edwards family in 1989. White was then questioned about this triple murder. Initially, he denied it but later confessed after seeing parts of Manuel’s interview. He claimed he and a friend had gone to Bonita's apartment for drugs and sex, but they were scolded for not sharing. He alleged that his friend had stabbed Bonita, prompting both girls to check on her. He then claimed he assaulted and killed the daughters.

However, police determined that the friend White named had died months before the murders occurred. Upon this revelation, White admitted he made up the story and was solely responsible. DNA tests later identified his semen and blood samples at the crime scene, confirming his involvement.

On May 28, 1996, White was indicted for the murders of Bernette and Annette. He was found guilty two months later and sentenced to death. Since then, he has attempted to appeal his sentence multiple times, but all have been denied. Issues arose regarding the DNA tests from the Houston Police Department's crime lab, which had a past of inaccuracy. Despite the investigation into these tests, no evidence was found to overturn White's conviction.

In April 2014, the court set an execution date for January 28, 2015. His lawyers filed appeals claiming his good behavior in prison and personal circumstances should lead to a commutation. They also raised questions about the validity of his confession and DNA testing. On January 27, a day before his execution, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals stayed the execution to review new claims. Ultimately, the appeal favored the state, and a new execution date was scheduled for October 1, 2024. As of August 2024, White is still on death row at the Allan B. Polunsky Unit in Texas.
