Bio

Frederick Williams was born in 1959. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. As a child, he was known to be shy and reserved. Frederick had a stable upbringing, living with his family in a suburban area. His parents worked hard to provide for their children. Frederick had a close relationship with his siblings, especially his brother Larry.

Frederick's interest in becoming a firefighter began when he was young. He admired these first responders and looked up to their bravery. After finishing high school, he pursued his dream and became a firefighter. He joined the Memphis Fire Department and worked there for six years. He enjoyed his job and took pride in helping the community.

However, Frederick's life began to change due to personal problems. He faced difficulties in his marriage and experienced stress related to work. Reports indicate that he took a leave of absence from his job just before the tragic events occurred. His brother Larry mentioned that Frederick had enjoyed his work, but recent issues impacted his well-being.

In addition to his struggles at work, Frederick's mental health became a concern. There were indications that he had been dealing with depression and other issues. In late 1999, he was reportedly treated for personal troubles, and there were troubling signs of his state of mind, including a reported attempt to harm himself.

Frederick eventually married Stacey Williams, who was his second wife. The couple had been married for only a short time before the tragic events unfolded. Their marriage was under strain, and Frederick's mental health issues created a challenging environment. Despite these difficulties, he continued to work within the firefighting community until everything changed one fateful day in March 2000.

Murder Story

On March 8, 2000, Frederick Williams, an off-duty firefighter, committed a series of violent acts in Memphis, Tennessee. He began by killing his wife, Stacey Williams, inside their home. After the shooting, he set the house on fire. As firefighters and police responded to the blaze, Williams ambushed them. He emerged from the garage and opened fire on their arrival.

During this ambush, he tragically killed two firefighters, William Blakemore and Javier Lerma, along with Sheriff’s Deputy Rupert Peete, Jr. A bystander was also shot but did not sustain serious injuries.

In the chaos, police officers wounded Williams. He was arrested on the same day and later charged with multiple counts, including four counts of first-degree murder. He was hospitalized for his injuries before being taken into police custody.

In May 2006, after a trial, Williams was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He was then placed in a secure state mental hospital, where he would remain under treatment.
