murder story

On February 19, 1981, Fred Waterfield and David Gore murdered their first victims, Hsiang Huang Ling and her daughter Ying Hua Ling. Gore used his auxiliary police badge to trick 17-year-old Ying into getting into his truck. He drove her to her home, where he and Waterfield kidnapped both women. Gore claimed later that he tied Hsiang to a tree, and she choked to death. The two then dismembered the women and hid their body parts in oil drums, which they buried.

Their third victim was Judith Kay Daley, who was 35 years old. On July 15, 1981, Gore disabled her car and offered her a ride to the nearest phone. Instead, he took her to a secluded place to meet Waterfield. They both raped Daley, and Gore later said he disposed of her body in a swamp.

On May 20, 1983, the pair picked up two 14-year-old girls, Barbara Ann Byer and Angelica LaVallee, while they were hitchhiking in Orlando. Gore and Waterfield raped, killed, and dismembered both girls. These are the only murders for which Waterfield was convicted, leading to two consecutive life sentences.

On July 26, 1983, Lynn Elliott, age 17, and 14-year-old Regan Martin were hitchhiking when they were picked up by Gore and Waterfield. They took the girls to a house owned by Gore's parents. Waterfield left after seeing his sister, leaving Gore alone with the girls. Gore tied them up and assaulted them. Lynn managed to escape but was pursued by Gore, who shot her twice in the head when she fell. Regan was found later by police, handcuffed and tied up in the attic.

On December 7, 1983, Gore led police to the remains of three murder victims, including Hsiang and Ying Hua Ling. He admitted to killing three girls and two women overall.

Gore was charged with first-degree murder on August 10, 1983. His trial moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he was convicted of first-degree murder and received the death penalty on March 16, 1984. Waterfield was convicted on January 21, 1985, and was sentenced to life in prison.

Gore was executed on April 12, 2012, after serving nearly thirty years on death row. Waterfield was moved to Hardee Correctional Institution, where he has continued to claim his innocence.
