1931John Hall was the alias used by Everett T. Mull, also recorded as Everette Mull. He was born in North Carolina around 1879. Contemporary reports after his execution identified him as a native of Morganton, North Carolina. By 1931, he had moved to southern Nevada during the final years of Prohibition, when bootlegging and illegal liquor operations were active in and around Las Vegas.
Hall lived in Clark County, Nevada, with his wife, Eva Hall. He became connected to John C. O’Brien, another newcomer to the Las Vegas area. Both men were reportedly involved in the bootlegging business. Their association eventually became hostile after Hall came to believe that O’Brien had stolen from him.
On June 15, 1931, John Hall and John C. O’Brien were traveling in a car with members of both families in Clark County, Nevada. The vehicle belonged to the O’Brien family. Hall believed that O’Brien had been stealing from him in connection with their bootlegging activity. Without warning, Hall shot O’Brien five times in the back, killing him. After the shooting, Hall also severely beat Mrs. O’Brien with his revolver.
Hall and his wife attempted to flee after the killing. They were later captured in Southern California and returned to Nevada for prosecution. Hall was tried in Clark County and convicted of murder. His case drew public attention partly because women served on the jury, which was historically significant in Las Vegas legal history. He was sentenced to death.
On November 28, 1932, Hall was executed by lethal gas at Nevada State Prison in Carson City. Contemporary newspaper reports stated that he entered the gas chamber calmly, smiled, and waved goodbye to witnesses before the cyanide gas took effect. He was pronounced dead within minutes.
Hall was 52 or 53 years old at the time of his execution. His legal identity was John Hall, but after his case became public, authorities confirmed that his real name was Everett T. Mull, a man from North Carolina who had gone missing before resurfacing under the Hall alias.
