murder story

On July 23, 1983, a gruesome crime took place in the busy central marketplace of Rose Hill, one of Mauritius's commercial centers. Abdool Rashid Atchia, a 45-year-old man, was stabbed to death in broad daylight. Chaos erupted at the scene, and the assailant managed to flee amidst the panic.

The investigation remained unsolved for years until Eshan "Alexandré" Nayeck was arrested and charged with the murder in 1987. While specific details about how he was linked to the crime remain limited in public records, he was ultimately brought to trial at the Assize Court of Mauritius.

In July 1987, after a brief but impactful legal process, Nayeck was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by hanging. He appealed for clemency, but his request was denied by Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth, who signed the execution warrant.

On the morning of October 10, 1987, Eshan Nayeck was hanged at Beau Bassin Prison. The execution was carried out swiftly, and one hour later, doctors officially declared that the cause of death was strangulation. His hanging made him only the second person to be executed since Mauritius gained independence in 1968.
