March 09, 1994Years Active:
1994Public sources give very little verified information about Erwin Mikolajczyk’s childhood, family, schooling, or early jobs. Journal reports and public records that are easily found do not describe where he grew up or who his parents were.
He was 39 years old in 1994, which places his birth around 1954–1955. Beyond his age at that time, reliable sources do not provide clear details about his birthplace, early education, or early employment.
Because contemporary news reports and public records do not record his early years in detail, the early life of Erwin Mikolajczyk remains largely undocumented in the sources available.
On 9 March 1994 at the district court in Euskirchen, Germany, 39-year-old Erwin Mikolajczyk re-entered the court building after his appeal ended with his conviction being upheld. He was armed with a .45-caliber Colt pistol and carried a homemade bomb in a backpack. In the hallway he approached Vera Lamesic, hugged her, then fatally shot her, two women who had accompanied her, and two other people. He then entered the courtroom and killed 33-year-old judge Alexander Schäfer. When he ran out of ammunition, Mikolajczyk killed himself by detonating the bomb. Eight other people were wounded in the attack.
The named victims were Peter Kurth; Vera Lamesic, 56; Agnes Müller; Peter Preuß; Marianne Rübsam; and Alexander Schäfer, 33.
