— Ervin Antonio Lupoe
Ervin Antonio Lupoe was born in 1968 in the United States. Later reporting states that he was born in Georgia and spent part of his life in Northern California. After high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps for several years. After leaving the Marines, Lupoe completed a law-enforcement academy program and tried to become a police officer, but he was rejected by several agencies. He later worked as a security guard before becoming an X-ray or radiology technician at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center.
Lupoe married Ana Ramirez Lupoe in 1999. The couple had five children, including two sets of twins. They bought a home in Wilmington, a Los Angeles neighborhood near the Port of Los Angeles, and later expanded it into a larger two-story house.
Before the killings, Ervin and Ana Lupoe were both fired from Kaiser Permanente after an internal investigation. Kaiser officials later said the couple had falsified income information to qualify for cheaper child care. Reports also stated that they had mortgage and tax problems, including a bounced check connected to property taxes.
In the days before the deaths, Lupoe told school officials that the family was moving to Kansas. He also contacted relatives and asked for help with personal matters. On the morning the bodies were found, he faxed a letter to a Los Angeles television station blaming the couple’s job loss and workplace dispute for the tragedy.
The Lupoe family deaths happened at their home on McFarland Avenue in Wilmington, Los Angeles, California. Investigators believed the killings happened between the evening of January 26, 2009, and the morning of January 27, 2009.
Before police arrived, Ervin Lupoe sent a suicide letter to KABC-TV. In the letter, he identified himself, his wife, and their children by name. He wrote about the couple’s firing from Kaiser Permanente and claimed that a hospital administrator had made a cruel comment about suicide. Kaiser denied that any employee told him to harm himself or his family.

Lupoe also called Ana’s brother, Cesar Ramirez, and said that Ana and the children were dead. He reportedly told Ramirez, “I’m sorry, I had to do it. We love you and I’m next.” Ramirez contacted authorities, and KABC-TV also called police after receiving the fax.

Los Angeles police entered the home around 8:30 a.m. on January 27. They found seven bodies inside. Ana Lupoe and the twin boys, Benjamin and Christian, were found in one upstairs bedroom. Ervin Lupoe was found in another bedroom with Brittney, Jaszmin, and Jassely. A revolver was found near his body.
All six victims had been shot in the head. Some had been shot more than once. Police treated the case as a murder-suicide and identified Ervin Lupoe as the killer. Reports stated that the family had recently lost both incomes, had tax and debt problems, and had been planning to leave California for Kansas.
The killings received national attention because they occurred during the 2008–2009 financial crisis and involved a family under employment and debt pressure. Authorities and community leaders emphasized that financial trouble was not a reason for violence and urged people in crisis to seek help. Ervin Antonio Lupoe died by suicide on January 27, 2009.
