Bio

Erika Elaine Grace was born on February 3, 1978, in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, to Gerald Mitchell Grace and Charlotte Gail (Klotz) Grace. She was regarded as a high-achieving student and athlete, excelling academically and participating in basketball. She later attended Mary Washington College, where she continued to distinguish herself as an honors student.

In 1998, at the age of 20, she married Benjamin Adam Sifrit. Shortly after their marriage, the couple relocated to the Altoona, Pennsylvania area near Erika’s hometown, where they jointly operated a scrapbook store. To acquaintances, Erika appeared organized, ambitious, and socially engaged, projecting stability and success.

Behind this outward appearance, however, investigators later uncovered a relationship dynamic marked by domination, role-playing fantasies, and escalating violent behavior.

Erika Elaine Sifrit, who was convicted in 2003 in the Ocean City killings of Joshua Ford and Martha Crutchley.

Murder Story

On the night of May 25, 2002, Erika Sifrit and her husband met two tourists, Joshua Edward Ford and Martha Margene “Geney” Crutchley, who were visiting Ocean City, Maryland from Fairfax, Virginia. After spending the evening drinking and socializing at the Seacrets nightclub, the four returned to the Sifrits’ condominium located at The Rainbow on 112th Street.

Once inside, Erika accused Crutchley and Ford of stealing her purse—an accusation later determined to be entirely fabricated. According to investigators, the false claim was used to terrorize the victims. Erika produced a firearm and threatened the couple, stating that failure to return the purse would result in their deaths.

Ford retreated into a bathroom. Erika fired four shots through the closed door, killing him. Crutchley was subsequently killed inside the apartment. Although the precise cause of her death could not be determined due to dismemberment, evidence indicated she was stabbed and psychologically terrorized prior to death, including shots fired near her head.

Following the murders, the bodies were dismembered and placed in trash bags, then discarded in a grocery store dumpster in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The remains were transported to a landfill, where they were discovered nine days later.

Erika was arrested on May 31, 2002, after she and her husband were caught burglarizing a restaurant. Police found the victims’ driver’s licenses in her purse. She confessed to the murders but attempted to deflect primary responsibility onto her husband.

On June 11, 2003, Erika Sifrit was convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Joshua Ford and second-degree murder for the killing of Martha Crutchley. She was sentenced to life imprisonment plus twenty years. Multiple appeals were denied, and she was denied parole again in 2024. She remains incarcerated at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women.
