murder story
On January 31, 2013, Mark Hasse was shot and killed while walking near the courthouse in Kaufman, Texas. Hasse was the chief assistant district attorney. He was shot multiple times by a gunman who then escaped in a waiting car. This incident sparked a large manhunt involving many law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the DEA.
On March 30, 2013, Michael McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found dead in their home in Talty, Texas. They had both been shot in what was described as a home invasion. A family friend discovered the bodies when he went to check on them after being unable to reach them by phone. The front door was found unlocked, which was unusual given the recent murder of Mark Hasse.
On April 18, 2013, Eric Lyle Williams and his wife, Kim, were arrested in connection with the murders of Hasse and the McLellands. Williams had a history of legal troubles and had previously been convicted of burglary and theft. He was known to be the only person prosecuted by both of the murdered district attorneys.
The trial for Eric Williams was moved out of Kaufman County due to the extensive media coverage surrounding the case. On December 4, 2014, he was found guilty of capital murder. He was sentenced to die by lethal injection on December 17, 2014. As of October 2021, he was in prison awaiting execution. Williams' wife, Kim, pleaded guilty to her role in the murders and was sentenced to 40 years in prison after testifying against him.
